Description

The Koh Samui mushroom are native to an island in Thailand called by the same name, and picked by Enthomycologist John Allen (also credited with the Cambodian strain) in the 90's. The Koh Samui mushroom has been used for centuries in traditional Thai healing ceremonies.

There has been some debate as to whether Koh Samui belong to the Mexicanae genus of Psilocybe mushrooms rather than Psilocybe Cubensis. If this were true, it would make Koh Samui mushrooms the only strain from the Mexicanae genus that’s found outside North America. Gastón Guzmán, a Mexican mycologist and anthropologist, placed this mushroom in the Mexicanae category due to its rhomboid-shaped spores and its ability to grow sclerotia (a compact growth in the mycelium containing food reserves, which is an evolutionary trait that emerged from surviving extreme temperatures).

Most experts agree that Koh Samui mushrooms are a strain of Psilocybe Cubensis.

Genus: Psilocybe
Species: Cubensis
Variety: Koh Samui
Spores: Dark purplish brown
Habitat: Bovine, Equine Dung and Enriched Soils
Climate: Subtropical
Cap: 25-75 mm in diameter, convex to broadly convex to plane at maturity.
Stem: 125-200 mm in length.
Gills: Attachment adnate to adnexed. Grayish coloration in young fruit bodies becoming nearly black in maturity

How do I store Koh Samui spores?

Spores should be stored in a cool, dark and dry environment. You can also store spores in the fridge (just make sure the syringe is in a clean zip-lock bag such as the packaging the spores are sent in).

Can I freeze my Koh Samui spore syringe?

DO NOT allow spores to freeze. This is not as you would rightly be guessing that it is a bummer to have to wait for your syringe to defrost before being able to view the spores under the microscope. The issue is that the spore cells will burst as the water expands on freezing.

How long can I keep my Koh Samui spore syringe before using?

Spore syringes should be ideally used as soon as possible. If stored correctly the spores will be fine for 6 months. The longer you leave the spore syringe the more chance of contamination being present when viewing under the microscope.

Can I reuse my Koh Samui spore syringe if I have some spore solution left?

Yes! The best thing to do is leave the needle on and flame sterilise before storing with the needle cover put back on. DO NOT remove the needle to put the syringe cap back on as this will allow an opportunity for contamination to occur. When you come to use your spore syringe again please flame sterilise again before pushing a small amount of the spore solution out of the needle. You are now able to carry on your microscopic studies.

How do I get my Koh Samui syringe ready for the microscope?

The aim of the game when viewing spores under the microscope is cleanliness. This means 1) you need to be as clean as possible, 2) your environment needs to be as clean as possible and 3) your equipment needs to be as clean as possible.

For you to be as clean as possible have a shower, wear clean clothes, and give your hands a good clean with 70% isopropyl aclohol (or where sterile gloves).

To work in a clean environment ideally you will be using a Still Air Box (you can see how to make one here) or a flow hood. If you do not have access to these then the next best thing is to work in a clean and draft free room. We are trying to eliminate as much as possible the chance of something landing on your slide other than your selected spores.

Give your equipment a good clean with 70% isopropyl alcohol as well. At this point we are ready to re-clean our hands with the alcohol wipe, remove the syringe cap and attach the supplied sterile needle ready for use.

Delivered on time great customer service but...

Everything great. But I gave 4/5 as I thought the spores in the syringe were very little and I failed to see any spores in one syringe. I've ordered others and they were much fuller. I've put them all onto an agar dish. So let's see what I get.
